THE
FUTURE OF PLAY is just a click away
TagPlus consists of a button type smart
tag, a companion app and a back-end analytics platform. Kids interact with
their tags with four simple actions: “click”, “long press”, “shake” and “bump”.
Actions are instantly relayed to the TagPlus app to execute the corresponding,
pre-programmed play scenarios.
FUNCTIONALITY
“Click” opens the social media interface
where kids can easily upload their own creations and see creations of other kids playing
with the same toy. Think of
this as a “mini-Facebook for Kids”. The app also features competitions, as a
way to jump-start creative uses of the toy. This helps prolong the life of the
toy by boosting interest levels.
“Long press”
activates the TagPlus app to show toy related content.
“Shake” helps kids find
and connect with kids around the world that are playing
with the sametoy.
“Bump” two tags from two
different toys and the app shows ways the two toys can be combined to create
new and interesting creations.
DESIGNED
TO APPEAL & FOR EASE OF USE
The smart tag needed to appeal to kids,
long term. We worked with kids and toy makers over a 6-month prototyping phase,
to design a form factor that comfortably fits in the hand of a 7-year old.
Bright colors and the use of LEDs add playful appeal. The smart tag is designed
with the simplified shape of an animal, making it appealing to children. It has
a soft, organic coating without sharp edges. It has an ear-shaped LED lighting
system, giving out attractive feedbacks while enhancing its quality. It also an
intriguing fidget gear for reducing stress and improving concentration.
With a single, simple button interface
kids can perform four actions that correlate to actions in the app: Click,
hold, shake, bump were proven, through exhaustive prototyping and field tests,
to be the actions kids would recall and perform most easily.
All play scenarios that are available on
the companion TagPlus app have also gone through multiple iterations. Beyond
safe-play, increasing kids’ engagement with their toys has been a priority.
Even for kids who don’t have the smart tag, the TagPlus app provides a virtual
play corner where they can play with virtual blocks, create stories and publish
them for other kids to enjoy. For kids who have the tags, new content for their
existing TagPlus-connected toys and related games pop up on the screen
depending on the action performed on the tag. These features can easily be
updated by toy companies.
USE
OF TAGPLUS
We don’t expect kids to give up screens,
but TagPlus has been proven to dramatically increase the time kids spend
playing in the physical world. In our field tests, children spent 75% of their
TagPlus play time building and just 25% sharing their creations on the app.
Child Care professionals believe this is a healthy balance. Additionally,
“likes” on the app stimulate kids to spend even more time with physical play
because more creative creations garner more likes. Online peer reviews are
actually stimulating increased offline play for kids, for the first time!
Parents love the fact that TagPlus is
increasing the rate of repeat play with toys because it extends toy’s overall
lifespan. Simply put, this means parents buy fewer toys.
For toymakers, TagPlus is a window into
how kids actually play with their toys, helping them come up with more hit
toys.
A
leading toy maker that conducted extensive tests with TagPlus said – “[TagPlus]
serves much needed new method to connect online and offline playgrounds.
TagPlus is the shortcut to connect online community right at the moment the
kids unbox a new toy thus providing a more immersive play experience.”
